According to a survey reported by Forbes, nearly half of the women surveyed didn't know the difference between perimenopause and menopause itself. This lack of awareness could potentially impact the number of women who seek treatment for their menopausal symptoms, including HRT.
An infographic from Visual.ly provides some insight into the prevalence of HRT among women in the USA. It states that approximately 19% of women aged 40 to 44 have ever received any type of counseling from a physician on HRT usage. This percentage increases with age, with 64% of women aged 50 to 54, and 68% of women aged 55 to 60 having received counseling on HRT. Of all women who received hormone replacement therapy counseling in 1998, nearly 90% reported that they also received information about the therapy.
Celebrities and HRT
The conversation around menopause and HRT has been amplified by several celebrities who have openly discussed their experiences. British actress Jane Seymour started using HRT at age 47 to help her deal with her menopausal symptoms. After seven years of HRT, she decided to stop treatment and try a holistic medicine approach to treat the symptoms.
Other celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, and Salma Hayek, have been open about their experiences with menopausal symptoms. Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey have also shared their personal experiences of menopause and the treatments they've used, including HRT.
HRT at Joi
While the exact number of women on HRT in the USA is not readily available, it's clear that a significant number of women are receiving counseling about this treatment option. The open discussions by celebrities about their experiences with menopause and HRT are helping to raise awareness and normalize the conversation around these topics. As more women become informed about their options, the number of women on HRT may continue to rise. If you’re curious about HRT, contact our experts at Joi for more information!
