Chelsea Handler: Ozempic Prescriptions for Semaglutide in Hollywood

There are plenty of celebrities who appear to have been using Ozempic or other brand name semaglutide therapy for weight loss. For Chelsea Handler, Ozempic was not something she realized she had been prescribed. Her doctor told her she would be taking semaglutide, which she did not know was branded as Ozempic and Wegovy. 

Chelsea Handler’s Ozempic Experience

Chelsea Handler has managed to keep her figure slim and fit for decades and is not shy about sharing videos of herself working out with her personal trainer. She discusses how she had no idea she was taking Ozempic on a podcast, claiming that her doctor prescribed her a medication for weight loss, referring to it as semaglutide. She said that at the time, she had no idea that Ozempic is a brand name for semaglutide, but her doctor told her it was great if she wanted to drop five pounds.  

Other Celebrities That Have Taken Ozempic

Ozempic is one of the hottest topics in Hollywood at the moment. Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the 2023 Academy Awards by cracking a joke about the popular peptide saying "When I look around at this room I can't help but wonder, 'Is Ozempic right for me?'" The world keeps a close eye on the citizens of Hollywood, so we all tend to notice when a startling number of them start looking thinner and more fit than before. While some celebrities aren't willing to admit when they need a little extra help in losing weight, others are. When confronted about his secret to looking "fit, ripped, & healthy" in a tweet, Elon Musk openly admitted to taking Wegovy, another popular name brand semaglutide. 

However, most celebrities aren't so forthcoming when asked about how they have recently started to look so healthy and fit. Celebrities aren't typically quick to admit when they've had a little help looking as good as they do. Photoshopping and getting plastic surgery are two other common things many celebrities will deny, so it's no surprise that most would be shy to admit to taking Ozempic or another brand of semaglutide. Image is everything in Hollywood, and the fear of judgment is real. Well known faces like Khloe Kardashian have been addressing rumors of Ozempic usage, denying that it was anything but hard work in the gym. 

Semaglutide Is FDA Approved for Weight Loss

Semaglutide was originally intended to treat diabetes, however, it is not uncommon for doctors to prescribe medications "off-label" for a different purpose. This has become quite common with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants. In June 2021, the FDA approved Wegovy for "chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), for use in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity." This same news release from the FDA states that Wegovy was tested for safety and efficacy in four 68-week trials, three being randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials and one being a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized withdrawal trial where patients either continued with the treatment or switched to a placebo.
